Trompe L'oeil -- The Menswear Runway Analysis of Y/Project

It was in the lush garden of a bourgeois high school that Glenn Martens unveiled Y/Project‘s collection, which features the brand’s signature elements, from asymmetrical tops cleverly structured by pressure plays to tank tops (and draped dresses) suspended from invisible nylon threads, to extremely large creations with sculptural and ironic shapes, between drapes, undulations and strange blisters. There are also trompe-l’oeil prints, initiated during Glenn Martens’ successful collaboration with Jean-Paul Gaultier.

Disorderly Aesthetics -- The Analysis of Y/Project The Menswear Designer Brand

Y/Project was founded by the French designer Yohan Serfaty and his business partner Gilles Elalouf in 2010. Because of the death of Serfaty in 2013, the Belgian designer Glenn Martens, the first assistant of Serfaty, was invited to be the creative director of the brand. Y/Project accentuates personality and independence through street fashion. Uncoordinated dichotomy is combined with utility unisex styles to interpret the temperament of women and men. Focus on the layering, deconstruction, and asymmetric design of Y/Project.

Advant-garde Design -- The Analysis of Y/Project Womenswear Designer Brand

Belgian designer Glenn Martens once worked for Jean Paul Gaultier and then founded his own namesake brand. Later, he took the helm of the Parisian unisex brand Y/Project in 2013 and launched its womenswear collection in 2014. As a source of subculture, Martens brought his radical experimental vision to the ready-to-wear clothing of his brand, pushing design norms to the extreme through unconventional tailoring and unisex silhouette. The iconic deconstructed denim of the brand takes the forms of tailored jeans and over-sized denim jackets. Workwear such as bomber jackets, T-shirts and overalls have been redesigned with oversized silhouettes, while classic tailored items, including suit jackets and masculine style shirts, have an infinitely transformable structure. The Y/Project S/S 2020 collection, which is also rooted in the context of the sub-culture, infiltrates the structural lines of formal suit. Through highly recognizable aesthetic symbols such as double-stacked trousers, double-shouldered shirts, oversized dropped shoulders matched with waisted geometric lines, the core of “deconstruction&construction” is fully presented, which further gives the brand a unique conceptual language. Meanwhile, the extensive use of organza and velvety soft fibers is also an almost perfect embodiment of the ambiguous gender and eclectic humorous concept.

Deconstruction, Twist and Asymmetry -- The Analysis of Y/Project The Womenswear Designer Brand

Y/Project is founded in 2010 in Paris by the designer Yohan Serfaty. And the former assistant of Yohan, Glenn Martens assumed the creative director in 2013. He didn't maintain the traditional style of the brand and injected his own unique design aesthetic. Since then, extravagant and deconstructed designs have become the brand gene. Glenn Martens blends extreme elegance with contemporary street style, and he is pursuing the perfect balance between avant-garde tailoring and comfortable dressing experience. A/W 21/22 Y/Project collection still creates intense beauty impact through the first combination of masculinity and femininity. The style this season is richer and more inclusive. From British gentlemen to rebellious teenagers and from professional elite to luxurious evening wear, we can find all the relative Dress Code from out daily life here. Twist, pioneer crinkles, asymmetry and deconstruction, all the chaos and harmony become the key visual language this season.
