Angela Santana (b.1986) is a Swiss-born artist currently living and working in New York. Santana’s latest body of work reconstructs the depiction and perception of the classical trope that is the female nude, creating an empowering reinterpretation. This series brings together a mass of intimate images of the female body to interrogate the subjugation of the male gaze. Santana explores the intersection between the fast-paced consumption of the online world and the historical representation of the female body. Santana’s technique disrupts classical approaches to oil paint through her process of digitally layering, and radically reconstructing illicit images of women, before painting them. Santana aims to represent the human body in a new way, free from bias or objectification. Her works reimagine how we might present, witness, and digest, artworks depicting the female body - rejecting a classical and male dominated lens. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Whitney Mallet Comments: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Multiplicity, flux, range, these are all aspirations palpable in the elasticity of Santana’s compositions. By continually shifting the digital layers in her composition as she paints them, she captures a flicker in the resultant portrait, a winking dynamism contained in the static image. This formal gesture towards metamorphosis suggests the larger conceptual project of representation in which Santana is invested, a poetic proclamation that new forms and figures are possible. The more Frankenstenian her manipulations, the more it’s apparent that the way we’ve become accustomed to seeing the gendered body is actually itself a distortion.”
